About the PIMU

Our goal is to help sons and their dads create great memories and an even tighter bond by participating together in many great activities.  In addition to the father/son bond, we find that many of our young braves create lasting friendships with each other and the same can be said about our older braves.

Who we are:
PIMU families come from as far away as the Seacliff area of Huntington Beach to Costa Mesa residents whose kids attend Moffett Elementary in Huntington Beach.  The largest percentage of our tribe comes from the areas that feed the Eader and Moffett Elementary schools.  While we are not the largest or smallest tribe, we are usually viewed as being one of the strongest.  One of the things that sets us apart are the truly fantastic kids and dads that call themselves PIMU.

Meetings
We have at least one tribe meeting and one Nation event each month.  While participation is consistently strong, everyone understands that we all have busy lives so there is no pressure to attend every event.  The diversity of parent interests and experiences makes our activities varied and interesting.  Members often find themselves being introduced to something fun that they wouldn’t have considered doing on their own.  In addition to Nation campouts, crafts and other local meetings, our 2008 calendar included Speedway motorcycle racing, Estes rocket building and launching (http://www.greatcoastalnation.com/index.php/Pimu/resource/pimu_strikes_back_video/) and The Miramar Air Show.  The dates of our meetings are often flexible to accommodate our varied activities.  Meeting dates are usually posted 1 – 2 months in advance so that everyone has time to coordinate schedules.

PIMU Indians
PIMU is derived from the Native American name for Catalina Island.

The name of our tribe is based on the language of the Native American Indians who lived in Southern California and on Catalina Island.  These people became known as the Garrielion, because many of those who survived European diseases and the disruption of their normal trade patterns and culture went to the Mission San Gabriel in Los Angeles.

The Native Americans who lived here at the time the Spanish found them called Catalina Island “Pemú‘nga”  The PIMU tribe name is thus derived from the Indian name for Catalina Island.

We are proud to have such a local history for our tribe.  Remnants of the Indian tribe on which we are based date back 7000 years on Catalina Island and can be found today in the Bolsa Chica Nature Preserve and Fairview Park.  You may have even ridden your bike over the piles of dirt protecting the Native American artifacts in Fairview Park, behind Estancia High School.
