Huntington Beach July 4th Parade

hosted by the Kiowa

image

Be there starting at 9:45AM and no later then 10:30 AM.

Indian Guides starting point has changed and will now be on PCH at 13th street. See attached map. All the thick black lines are police barricades. We are in the third division of three divisions. Our parade entry # is 311 (311 will be painted on PCH on July 3rd).

Wagons, coolers with water, etc., are OK. No bicycles, no razors, no skateboards. We walk or ride in a Dad pulled wagon.

Bring drums, banners, vest, headdresses and coup sticks.

A link to a downloadable Participant Pass can be found on this page.

Tri-Color war paint sticks will be furnished by the Kiowa.

To get to the entry site #311, take Goldenwest towards PCH, turn left on either Palm or Orange {The left turn at Orange may be backed up, so it might be quicker to turn at Palm}. Then turn right on 13th or 12th. For those in Huntington Harbor/Sunset, you can drive down PCH and turn left onto Goldenwest. For those on the east side of town or Costa Mesa, take Beach Ave north at least to Garfield, then turn left to Goldenwest. To miss 99% of the parade traffic, go all the way up to Slater, then take Slater over to Goldenwest.

We can drive all the way down to PCH for drop offs, so the attached Participant Pass likely won’t be needed. The Participant Pass is used only for crossing the police barricades on PCH to drop off and pick up - not for parking. These can be printed out as black & white on white paper - they do not have to be colored or two sided.

Parking will probably not be available anywhere south of Palm.

There is a pancake breakfast in Lake Park that morning.

FAS Car/Pinewood Derby

hosted by the Sioux

Calling All Craftsmen! The Pinewood Derby car kits are here.

Get out the band saws, sandpaper and paint. It is time for the Great Coastal Nation annual Pinewood Derby. This is a great nation event and time for fathers and sons to work together to build a lifelong memory.
The tribal chiefs have the car kits.

This years $20.00 fee includes one kit and race entry. The fee must be paid to your chief in order to race even if you have an old kit from a previous year.

Alumni | Check In 11:30 am | Race 12:00 pm
3rd Grade | Check In 12:00 pm | Race 12:30 pm
2nd Grade | Check In 12:45 pm | Race 1:15 pm
1st Grade | Check In 1:30 pm | Race 2:00 pm
Kindergarten | Check In 2:15 pm | Race 2:45 pm

Check-in for each race closes at race time.  We can’t handle late check-ins, so once the race starts, check-in ends.

Awards: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be awarded in each age group for fastest cars, most original cars and best indian cars.  Every brave receives a medal and a patch.

Registration: The cost is $20 for the car and registration, but all participants need to be pre-registered through their tribe.  Chiefs, please forward final lists for each of your participating braves to the nation chief when you pay for the cars.  For each brave we’ll need a name, tribe, and class (K, 1st, 2nd, etc.)  We’ll need the participant lists by Monday, February 22, so that we have time to load it into the scoring database.

Rules: I have attached a draft of the 2010 rules.  We’ve simplified the rules and taken out some language that is outdated.  The intent is for the 2010 rules to consistently reflect the way we have run the race over the last few years.  Any concerns or comments on the rules, let me know ASAP.

There will a concessions service and a practice track available.  We expect good weather but we’ll be able to race rain or shine.

UPDATE!
Need spare parts for your car? Lost a screw? Break the axel dowel? Bad paint job? I have extra parts for your lost or missing kit. Email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
Need a whole new kit? I have extra kits for $7 each, kit only. No entrance fee, patch, certificate, etc.
Have a son that made the car all by himself? Let me know the story. I have a Nation Chief Award for one brave that assembled, painted, stickered, glued the car with little or no help.

Transport: Depart Newport (Balboa Pavilion) on the Catalina Flyer (400 Main St, Newport Beach).
Check in: 12:00 on Friday, June 25 (boat departs at 1:00)
Food: Fri (dinner), Sat (breakfast, lunch, dinner), Sun (breakfast, dinner)
Return: Board at 7:00PM and depart Two Harbors 7:30 Sunday
Luggage: All types of luggage is allowed (including trash cans)

imageMark your luggage with a yellow ribbon (for GCN) and place it in the staging area when you arrive arrive at the dock. A few dads will watch kids while the rest of the dads load luggage onto the boat.  When we arrive at Two Harbors, the same process is used to unload the luggage to the end of the dock.  There it is picked up and trucked to the campground near site #20.  You’ll pick it up from there and walk it to your camp area.  Many dads find that rolling trash cans are a convenient way to transport gear, whatever luggage you bring, make sure it’s well identified, easy for you to recognize, and something you can move up and down ramps and hills easily.

The most convenient place to drop off your stuff is at the corner of Main and E Bay.  The earlier you arrive the easier this will be, finding a spot on the curb gets to be a challenge close to departure time.  There is a large parking lot near the Balboa pier (see map on flyer) where you can leave your car if you’re not getting dropped off ($8/day).

Checking In

imageWhen you arrive at Balboa Pavilion: Bring your luggage to the gathering area and check in with the event coordinator.  You’ll receive wrist bands that are required to get on the boat.  You’ll also receive yellow ribbon to place on all your luggage.  This ribbon will determine where your luggage gets dropped off at the campground.  GCN (yellow tagged) luggage will be dropped off near campsite #20.

imageWhen you arrive at the Island: Dads will unload the luggage to the end of the pier.  From there it will be trucked to the campground.  There is a 1/4 mile walk to the campground (path shown in flyer).  Your tribe chief should know which campsites you’re headed for.

More Details

imageFood: Menu option have not been finalized, but typical breakfast includes eggs, bacon, cereal, milk, orange juice and coffee.  Typical lunch includes hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips, and a treat with Gatorade & water.  Typical dinner includes lasagna or tacos, salad, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, bread, and a treat with Gatorade and water.  You might want to bring additional snack food if you’re brave is a picky eater, because while the food is generally very good, options at each meal are limited.  The only meal that will not be provided is Sunday lunch.  You are encouraged to bring food, grab something from the store, or eat at the restaurant on your own schedule.  Dinner will be served on the beach Sunday evening.

imageAccommodations: There are sinks, drinking fountains, and outdoor showers in the campground as well as pit toilets.  Indoor coin operated showers and flush toilets can be found in Two Harbors 1/4 mile from the campground.  Campsites have fire pits and picnic tables.  There is a small store in Two Harbors that sells snack foods, beverages, icr, wood, ice cream, and camp items you may have forgotten.

Fall Camp 2009

hosted by the Blackfoot/Apache

If you signup online, just signup for yourself and not your little brave(s).  This way you will only be charged the $35 per family.

Oki Niksokowa,
After many hours in the Blackfoot Sweat Lodge, the Mighty Spirit has provided instruction and guidance to the Blackfoot tribe. Our tribal elders have battle with many confusing thoughts and visions. In the end they were shown a clear path in which to walk and lead all the Tribes of the Great Coastal Nation for a fun filled weekend of activities and games. This path will continue to foster the growth of Fathers and Sons. This is the vision that the Great Spirit has demonstrated to the Blackfoot Tribe. The Blackfoot will lead this charge for the coming school year and not allow the fog of indecision to hamper the Spirit of Fathers and Sons. The Blackfoot and all the tribes of the Great Coastal Nation will be challenged this year to up hold our activities, by the challenges of those who do not want to commit to their task.
For our pow-wow at Fall Camp, I have attached a flyer for your eyes (top right of window).
As there are those, that the Great Spirit has shown to the Blackfoot that do not want to cooperate, the Blackfoot are working on a method to collect the funds for the camp out.
For Saturday Night Camp Fire, I challenge all lil braves to demonstrate their knowledge of their Native American Tribe. Coup awards will be presented.

Huntington Beach July 4th Parade

hosted by the Kiowa

MUST have kids there at 9:00AM, or 9:45AM, or 9:30AM, or 10:00AM. Use your best judgment as parade starts at 10AM and we are in the first group.

Indian Guides starting point has changed and will now be on PCH between 10th and 11th streets. See attached map (top right of this page). All the thick black lines are police barricades. We are in the first division of three divisions. Our parade entry # is 112 (will be painted on PCH on July 3rd). Groups are numbered 1-50, then 101-150. There are 5 or so bands in front of us. Each band is divided into 5 or so groups (drum line, flags, etc) for judging, so that we will be about the 45th group (not 62nd). We will not be in the front of parade as in the past.

Wagons, coolers with water, etc., are OK. No bicycles, no razors, no skateboards. We walk or ride in a Dad pulled wagon.

A link to a downloadable Participant Pass can be found on the top right of this page.

Tri-Color war paint will be furnished by the Kiowa.

To get to the entry site #112, take Goldenwest towards PCH, turn left on either Palm or Orange {The left turn at Orange may be backed up, so it might be quicker to turn at Palm}. Then turn right on 11th or 10th.

“Y-Princess/Guides” activities range from smaller bi-weekly or monthly events ranging from craft making, recreation, or tours of local places to embarking on large-scale camping trips in the mountains or beaches together.  Unique experiences are gained by dads and children and other friendships gained create lasting bonds and life-long memories.

Winter Camp

Highway patrol requires ALL cars to have chains(even 4x4’s)

Wahoka Great Coastal Nation!

Chief Eagle of the North brings Good News for those Braves with the courage and stamina to endure Winter Camp in the lair of the Big Bears. We will assemble the sacred Nation Hoop high on the Mountain top above Lake Cedar. I have been to the mountain top, and I speak with straight words when I say this place is awesome. This is sure to be a memorable experience, and I will send my prayers to the powers of the North to bless us with the cold winds and white silence, so we can focus our attention on our sons and Honor them for the Bravery and Kindness in front of the Nation Fire.

We seek young and old braves to win the Special Medicine Man Challenge Award by singing together a song using the Indian Drum. I have a Special Chief’s Award for a brave who can tell me the history, story or words from the language of their tribe. And the coveted Lance Award for the best decorated Lance.

I am seeking young and old Hunters to share their bounty with others in the First Annual BIG TRADE CEREMONY Friday night. This will be during our Nation Dinner Friday when we all sit in a circle and Trade with others and listen with respect as the Chief and Medicine Man present gifts on behalf of anyone who wishes to Honor their Son or Father or Chief or anyone.  The Ceremonial Tradition (usually done after a four day fast at a Sundance Ceremony) works like this. We gather for dinner in a circle and sit on the floor as the Longhouse Council serves dinner to you. During this hour, the Chief/Medicine Man will make announcements and present gifts on behalf of others who wish to Honor someone. For instance, a dad wishes to Honor his Son for being a Good Listener, obeying the rules, or treating everyone with respect. He will write this on a note and give it to me with a gift to present like a cool hat or a shirt or toy and tell me who to give it to, perhaps his Chief or Sachem’s son for all the time they put in for the tribe. Whenever that person wears the hat or shirt, he will think of the dad’s Son and what a great kid he is. Usually the person Honored is not the recipient of the Gift. I wish to Honor my son Eddie for his Big generous heart so I will present someone, perhaps a Sachem or War Chief with an Indian Poncho as appreciation for their contributions in Honor of my Son Eddie. They of course will thank Eddie for such a cool gift and for being so generous.  During these Honoring announcements, which may take 45 minutes or more, a Trade is permitted in which if someone compliments you about your shirt or hat. You are obliged to give it to them. (don’t wear a Rolex!) You don’t say ‘can I have your hat or I’ll trade you this toy for your hat ’, you say “that is a cool hat”, which means I wish I had a hat like that. The person must give you the item and you should offer them something in return so they can remember it as a Good Trade. Sentimental or Special possesions of course are too personal to give/trade and should not be complimented or asked for.

We will have New Pal Coup Patches to give out at the Nation Campfire to those who have earned them. Please send .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) a list from your tribe of recipients and ranks earned. Also, feathers for those braves who know the AIMS.

Don’t miss this winter camp at CEDAR LAKE. Register Today and receive a limited edition Bear skin t-shirt made with 100% cotton.

Food provided Saturday through Sunday morning. Consult your tribe for Friday nights dinner. As most tribes prefer Friday dinner in town or may be late coming, there will be no Nation dinner Friday night.

After passing Boulder Bay and Metcalf Bay on your left, you’ll pass the Town Hall / Performing Arts Center on the right. About ⅕ miles further, make a right turn onto Tulip Lane. Sand Castle Contest
Buried Treasure Contest
Movie Night
Annual Night-time Appetizer Contest

Driving Directions:
The camp is located at 560 Silver Strand Blvd. (or 106 Carnation Ave.), Imperial Beach, CA 91932. Location entrance will be one of the two. Their phone number is 619.423.5850.

Traveling South on I-5 or I-805, exit Palm Ave. CAUTION! I-805 has two totally different Palm Ave. exits! DO NOT take Palm Ave exit #11A in San Diego. Instead travel 8.6 miles farther south to Palm Ave exit #2.  Turn right (West) at top of ramp, Palm Ave.
Stay on Palm Ave towards Imperial Beach. CAUTION! Be aware that Palm Ave & Highway 75 split. Palm Ave bears LEFT on to Imperial Beach. Highway 75 goes RIGHT (almost straight) to Silver Strand State Beach and Coronado.
Follow signs and keep LEFT on Palm Ave.
One block after the 4-way stop, turn right (North) onto Silver Strand Blvd.
Go 3 blocks and on your left you will see the entrance to YMCA Camp Surf!
Follow the entrance road to the left.
Park in parking lot then walk to check-in at the office.

Arrival Information:
Everyone can start setting up their camp Friday at 4:00 PM with just enough time to cruise around the town a little to find a nice place for dinner. Saturday breakfast through Sunday’s lunch are included so that you can have all day to play! Last year when we got here at 3:30pm there was already a line of cars waiting and we were about the 6th or 7th car in line. They were very strict about not letting any cars in until 4:00pm. This is because they are still trying to clear out the prior campers. Park in the lot and unload at your parking place. A truck with a trailer will be making rounds to pick up your gear and deliver it to the campsite location. You are responsible to stay in the parking lot to help load your gear onto the truck.

Campsites:
Campsite locations are not assigned until Friday afternoon. Each tribe will have a staked-out area along the beach. The order of the tribe sites was previously determined at the Nation Longhouse. We will bring one fire ring and they have a couple of old beat-up washbin fireplaces that we can probably snag so we should be good. If you absolutely want to be sure to have a camp fire and have a portable fire ring and have the room, bring it! There may not be much room for shade but if you’ve got it, it would be wise to at least pack it!

Quick Checklist:
Tent
Sleeping bag
Bathing Suits
Sun Screen
Towels
Wet Suit
Ice Chest with Snacks and Drinks
Boogie Board / Surf Board
Firewood
Shade

2008 Catalina Adventure

hosted by the Apache and Seminole

This year’s event features tent camping. So please bring your own tent.

Cost: $135 per person. Includes an event T-Shirt. Registrations after June 13 are $135 without a T-Shirt, so make sure to REGISTER NOW!

Registration for each additional child after the 1st is $120 and includes a T-Shirt if registration is received by June 13.

Participants must be at the Newport Harbor by 12:00pm on Friday. The boat promptly departs from Newport Harbor at 1:00. The boat departs Catalina Sunday at 7:30. Sunday dinner is included.

For more information, contact Taina at 714-847-9622.

Packing Information:
PACK LIGHT! This year we will share the ferry with three nations or more than 300 braves! That is up from 188 last year. Please ask your braves to bring the least amount possible with them to the island. We are only there for two nights, it will be warm, and the meals are taken care of so they should not have to pack heavily.

Firewood is available from the Ranger station on the island and snacks, beverages, fishing bait and ice can be purchased from the store in Two Harbors.

Pack all your gear in a 30 gallon (maximum) trash can on wheels.  The trash cans used by Rainbow Disposal are too large to load onto the Flyer.  Wagons are not allowed.

There will be trucks and staff from the camp site which take our gear there. All of the Big Braves form a fire line and both load and unload everything from the boat. Just a warning that all of the gear is stacked in the middle of it and anything that you take should be crush proof since a lot of weight may be put down on it. Some have found that it is easier to pack a cooler with clothing etc. and then fill it with ice and soft drinks when we arrive on the island.

Leave the lances, drums, and other large Indian Guide items at home. Leave all electronic games at home!

Bring your vests and, if you are a Tribe Chief or GCN Council member bring your headdresses. They roll up and can be packed tightly away. I will once again introduce the entire GCN Council and have all of you sit at the front of the Nation Campfire.

Parking and Drop Off Information:
Parking is available for the weekend at $8 a day by the Balboa Pier. If you are going to be dropped off, go down Balboa Blvd and make a left on Main St.

Fishing Derby Rules:
1)  Prizes will be fishing poles with the top three finishers in each division winning a pole.
2)  All braves are expected to cast, hook and reel in their own fish in order to qualify.  However, it is not unreasonable to expect fathers to partially assist the Braves in the Kindergarten division.  This isn’t a survival exercise but a fun tournament. That being said, fathers may assist but it is up to each father to use their judgment.  Obviously, fathers catching the fish lock stock and barrel for their Kindergartners is not acceptable but a little assistance here and there is fine.  All other divisions are expected to catch the fish on their own.
